Red’s Rec Room was a multi-attraction facility located in Phase Three of West Edmonton Mall. It consisted of bowling facilities, a pool hall, a smoking room named ‘The Furnace Room’, several dining rooms including Red’s Eats restaurant (with a 50’s diner theme), a large arcade, and a live music venue.
The facility was one-stop entertainment venue, with an excess of activates to enjoy.
The oversized arcade shared a floor with Eats diner, the Furnace Room, and the events stage. There were dozens of video and redemption games spread throughout the space. The arcade even had an interactive hockey goalie simulator.
The simulator would project the image of Wayne Gretzky skating on a hockey rink. The Great One would shoot pucks at the screen, and pucks would be shot at the player from hidden slots in the projection screen.
Over the attraction’s lifetime, many top-grade artists performed at the music venue. These included such acts as Collective Soul, George Thorogood, Arcade Fire, Theory of a Deadman, Our Lady Peace, GWAR, April Wine, POD, and Killswitch Engage. After the closure of Red’s, the stage venue was rebranded as The Edmonton Event Centre before it closed completely in 2013.
The pool hall was an 18+ facility in the evenings, but younger patrons were welcome during the day. Tables were rented by the hour, and the hall looked out over the events stage.
Red’s bowling facility still exists today in Ed’s Rec Room. The pool hall was also a part of Ed’s, but the space has now been removed from the attraction.
