Phase One of West Edmonton Mall was first opened in 1981. The entire mall consisted only of what we see today as this Phase. While it was already the largest shopping center in the world at that time, like today, there were no other major attractions.
Three of the mall's largest anchor tenants could historically be found here. Two of which, The Hudson's Bay Company and Sears, have stood the test of time, while others have come and gone. These include Eaton's, Zellers, and most recently Target.
In this section of the mall, we can find the Bronze Whale "Open Sea" in its new home, as well as the Centre Stage. The stage, which hosts various events throughout the year, is most famous as Santa's visiting area during the holiday season.
This area of the mall is the only Phase where you can find live trees still growing in the middle of the halls.
