From 1985, when the mall completed their Phase 2 expansion, up until 2004 when the Golden Resources Mall opened in China, West Edmonton Mall was the largest shopping mall in the world. At the time of its construction, it was innovative in that it was quite unique to see such a large collection of world-class attractions in a single mall.
While it remains the Largest Mall in North America today, it is no longer ranked on the top 10 list of largest malls in the world. A collection of newer malls, primarily throughout Asia and constructed since 2004, have popped up in the past 15 years. This has knocked West Edmonton Mall off the list of top 10 largest malls.
At the time of this writing, the mall ranks #19 in the list of largest malls by leasable area.
