In the mid 2000's, the citizens of Edmonton were confused.
Because their beloved West Edmonton Mall still had their Christmas decorations up… in the middle of summer. The official word from the mall, at least early on, was that they were “trying to spread the Christmas Cheer year-round”. It was kind of weird.
But then, the secret was revealed! They would be filming a Hollywood movie right here in Edmonton! It was called Christmas in Wonderland.
The movie stars Patrick Swayze, Carmen Electra, Chris Kattan, and Tim Curry. It’s actually not a bad cast by any stretch. In fact, on paper, it’s a pretty good sounding set of actors.
However, the movie itself is a little high on the cheese factor. This was a fairly low budget production.
Once notable scene includes Chris Kattan crashing a motorcycle (well, pocketbike to be more accurate) through the windows overlooking the World Waterpark, then landing in the wave pool. Also of note, is a terrible and somewhat creepy computer generated (CGI) elf scene which may leave you scarred for life.
The basic plot of Christmas in Wonderland is that West Edmonton Mall is… well, a wonderland! (Which isn’t that far from the truth). Patrick Swayze leaves his children to visit santa and explore the mall, only to discover that there is real magic in the mall - and perhaps the North Pole isn’t that far away either!
The bad guys, Chris Kattan and Carmen Electra, are trying to run a counterfeit money operation in the mall, but accidentally let the kids get their hands on the cash - leading to slapstick antics.
Overall, it’s a ho-hum flick. But one which I enjoy thoroughly. I’m sure it’s because I’m such a huge fan of the mall, but I watch Christmas in Wonderland every year!
