The Ice Palace

The Mayfield Toyota Ice Palace, formerly known as simply The Ice Palace, is a NHL-sized skating rink located in Phase Two of West Edmonton Mall.

The rink opened in 1983, when Phase Two of the mall first launched. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, the local professional NHL hockey team, the Edmonton Oilers, would schedule several yearly practices at the rink. This was a major draw at the time, as the team was highly successful, and visitors would flock to see star players including the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.

While the Oilers no longer hold scheduled practices in the space, they have (in recent years) organized autograph sessions and one-off practices at West Edmonton Mall . The rink also often hosts tournaments and other junior level hockey games, as well as “exposition” type events.

On a typical day, the rink offers skates for rent and visitors can enjoy a skate in the middle of the mall.

The Ice Palace is currently sponsored by Mayfeild Toyota, a local Edmonton car dealership which itself announced a move of their dealership to West Edmonton Mall. Occasionally, the rink is closed to would-be skaters, the ice is covered, and the dealership uses the space to feature their vehicles.
